MOBULA – ‘Genus of Manta Rays’
Mexican Alabaster
While swimming with manta rays in Hawaii, these massive, graceful creatures glided right up to me, and in that moment, they felt like living sculptures.
When I got my hands on this piece of Mexican Alabaster, its soft whites and smoky greys instantly reminded me of those incredible mantas. The stone itself guided my hands, shaping a form that echoes their wide, flowing wings. But this wasn’t an easy ride—Mexican Alabaster has both hard and soft spots; the bits of mica love to crumble just when you think you’ve got it under control. It's not the hardest material I’ve worked with, but it's one of the trickiest!
In the end, every challenge was worth it - an homage to the elegant, otherworldly dance of the manta ray.
