ARABESQUE - ‘One Leg Ballet Pose’
Utah Calcite
Sometimes I must trust the stone to take me in new directions. The term ‘Arabesque’ refers to intricate patterns of interlacing lines which adorn the architecture, textiles, and other art I saw on my recent trip to Egypt. What emerged from this block of stone is so different from my ‘Mobius’ forms that I think my hand was guided unconsciously by what I absorbed on my trip. In ballet, ‘Arabesque’ is also a graceful pose where the dancer stands on one leg and the other extends behind the body; creating a line that extends from the fingertips to the toes.
Choosing ‘Arabesque’ as the title for my sculpture draws inspiration from both Islamic art and ballet. It infuses the piece with a rich tapestry of cultural and artistic influences. I want viewers to appreciate the sculpture from both an aesthetic and symbolic perspective. The stone always knows.
